The Division of Nutritional Sciences, established in 1968, has grown into a highly respected interdisciplinary program that provides comprehensive and progressive graduate education in nutrition and serves as a catalyst for interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary nutrition research. Today the DNS faculty represent 12 departments and six colleges on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) campus. Several affiliates from the Chicago campus also participate. Now more than ever, nutritional scientists need to master not only nutrition and the complexities of metabolism, but also the analytical and theoretical approaches of other disciplines, including genetics, behavior, immunology, bioengineering, cognitive neuroscience, and bioinformatics, to name a few. Nutritional scientists should also be cognizant of physical, social, and economic factors affecting access to nutritious foods and dietary patterns both in the United States and abroad. The 21st-century nutritionist must be equipped to cross disciplinary boundaries because solutions to the most challenging problems of our time will require an interdisciplinary approach. Similarly, innovative technologies will most likely emerge from multidimensional teams. Thus, the need for nutritionists with comprehensive training has never been greater. Interdisciplinary research and education are now highly valued on the UIUC campus; DNS is considered an exemplary interdisciplinary graduate and research program.
